EFF-ANC Coalition ignore the rights of deaf residents

Issued by Ald Dean Stone & Cllr Mike da Silva – DA Ekurhuleni Spokesperson on SRAC & CoE PR Councillor

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni will write to Executive Mayor, Ald. Nkosindiphile Xhakaza requesting that he take immediate action and hold his mayoral committee accountable for their failure to implement the DA sponsored “Deaf Access Motion” which was unanimously approved by Council in 2023.

The motion will guarantee that every Customer Care Centre (CCC) in the city has an official proficient in South African Sign language to assist residents who are deaf.

The lack of implementation by the executive is inexcusable and once again highlights this administration’s lack of interest in providing equal and equitable services to our residents.

A task team composed of representatives from various departments is yet to be established – an important step in giving expression to this motion.

Further, there is no indication that staff in any of the city’s CCCs have been selected for comprehensive training.

The slow implementation of council resolutions under the ANC-EFF led coalition is becoming a perturbing trend.

Residents of Ekurhuleni deserve better, especially when it relates to their rights to access essential services.

The DA will continue to exercise its legislative powers to ensure this motion is implemented.
