The community of Kagiso is unable to use the Kagiso Memorial and Recreation Centre in Krugersdorp as it is not operational. This state-of-the-art facility is starting to perish because it is not being utilised. The Democratic Alliance (DA) made this startling discovery today during an oversight inspection at the facility.

The facility cannot operate as there is no staff. The centre has a dance studio and an exhibition hall, with a few pieces of art that have not been properly installed.

The gate to the entrance is broken, and the fence at the back of the sports field is also broken. This has led to residents entering the property from the back, putting the safety of the security guards at risk.

There is also a fully equipped gym and recording studio and a multipurpose hall that is not in use. The ceilings in the exhibition hall and the dance studio are beginning to collapse. The shower in the gym is also not working.

It is unacceptable that this facility is of no benefit to the community because of the lack of staff.

Furthermore, we have been informed that R20 million has been paid to a service provider to complete the heritage part of the project.

The DA will be tabling questions to both the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development and Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation to determine exactly how much money has been spent on this facility. We will also ask questions about how much money has been allocated for the maintenance of this facility over the last five financial years.

A DA government will ensure that this facility is fully staffed and that all parts of the centre are used to the benefit of the community, particularly the schoolchildren and our youth.
