The Democratic Alliance Women’s Network (DAWN) in Midvaal accompanied by Jack Bloom MPL, has today, the 30th of September 2024 submitted a petition signed by more than a thousand concerned women, to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GLP) urging the Gauteng Department of Health to intervene in local health care facilities.

The goal of the petition is to ensure that a Maternity Ward is urgently established at the Meyerton Clinic.

Due to a growing economy in Midvaal Local Municipality, the area’s population has started to grow in such a way that the Meyerton Clinic can no longer adequately cater to the needs of residents.

The core of the issue goes deeper than that, as many expectant mothers are necessitated to travel great distances, albeit in their first trimester, or during birth. This poses a significant health risk to both mother and child.

The Gauteng Department of Health’s vision is to provide high-quality, efficient and accessible healthcare to transform people’s lives.

A crucial part of this is that the department capacitates itself with the right sills, systems and equipment. It goes without saying that to provide the needed healthcare services to expectant mothers, the department must establish a maternity ward where needed. The residents who make use of the Meyerton Clinic deserve the dignity of knowing that they will be able to receive pre-, and post-natal care. Our petition outlines exactly that, and we believe that the more than 1000 voices calling for change in it will be heard.
