Today, Monday, 30 September 2024, the Democratic Alliance (DA) Gauteng Shadow MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (SACR), Kingsol Chabalala MPL, DA Gauteng Spokesperson for SACR, Leanne De Jager MPL, along with the DA Gauteng Member of SACR Committee Member, Jade Miller MPL, Constituency Head for Mogale City, Janho Engelbrecht MPL, and Spokesperson for Community Development, Cllr Girly Kubayi, will conduct an oversight inspection at the abandoned Kagiso Memorial and Recreation Centre.
The state-of-the-art Kagiso Memorial and Recreation Centre has been abandoned and has not been fully operational since its completion in 2016. It has a world-class sporting facility that should be used by the community for different sporting codes such as gymnastics, basketball, aerobics, and squash. There is also a music recording studio that is gathering dust.
In addition, the incredible heritage site holds immense potential to attract investment, boost the local economy, and generate employment opportunities for the residents of Mogale City. This facility has been neglected and allowed to disintegrate by the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation (SACR), depriving the residents of their intended benefits.
The DA will, as part of its Heritage Month campaign, reevaluate the heritage site to determine whether it is operating effectively and providing tangible benefits to the residents of Gauteng.
The media is invited to attend and there will be an opportunity for interviews and photographs.
Details of the event are as follows:
Date: Monday, 30 September 2024
