The DA can reveal that millions have been spent by Emfuleni Municipality on the Palm Springs multipurpose sports facility that is incomplete, with construction halted indefinitely.
Construction began in 2017, yet if you visit the site today, you are met with essentially nothing.
It is an underwhelming, empty piece of land that is overgrown with weeds, but it has cost taxpayers a jarring R25 million to date.
The municipality does not have a timeline for completing phase 2 of the project due to a funding shortfall.
Only after CoGTA, through the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) office, approves the funding will the municipality be in a position to provide an accurate date for completion. The outstanding construction work is estimated to take 24 months.
This half-finished project exposes the ANC’s failures in execution, planning and oversight.
In 2025, we submitted a petition to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL), demanding that the municipality complete the sports facility and hold those responsible for this failure accountable.
However, our petition was rejected by the ANC-led Petitions Committee with little basis.
We subsequently appealed to the ANC Speaker of the GPL, but despite numerous follow-up requests, our appeal has been ignored and remains unresolved.
We are still awaiting a hearing to address our appeal, but we have only been met with the Speaker’s wilful indifference.
The Speaker’s non-response shows a blatant disregard for transparency and accountability.
The residents of Emfuleni deserve recreational spaces and amenities to enjoy.
Residents should register to vote on 4 November in the Local Government Elections for a DA-led government that prioritises the quality of life of the residents of Emfuleni.
