The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the arrest of a former senior Emfuleni Local Municipality official in relation to R16 million worth of tender fraud and corruption.

Like municipalities across the country, Emfuleni is a crime scene. One of the worst-run municipalities in the country, that has been, and continues to be, hollowed out by cadres and corruption.

Emfuleni is truly the personification of ANC failure.

Today’s arrest follows the DA’s engagement with the HAWKS over these very R16 million tender irregularities. We are pleased to see that the long arm of the law will come for those who involve themselves in corruption.

However, this must not be the end. This official did not act alone, and we call for an expanded operation to include both the allegedly EFF-linked service provider and their ANC enablers.

Emfuleni cannot continue to be the cash cow for political parties who need to prepare themselves for the local government elections on 4 November.

One thing is clear though, their time is fast coming to an end. On the very same Local Government Election they are preparing themselves for, the DA stands ready to clean house and get the corrupt out of Emfuleni.

We will get Emfuleni working for all.
