The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Sedibeng welcomes the most recent council resolution, to write to the Gauteng MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Jacob Mamabolo, and request the suspension of Sedibeng Mayor, Lerato Maloka, pending a full disciplinary investigation into her misdeeds.
Council found that Maloka has been negligent in her mayoral duties.
Maloka has long been a problematic figure, today’s resolution centres around her, and other municipal officials’ misdeeds in wasting over R500 000.00 on a trip to Germany. Prominently, her role in the destruction of the Mayoral Vehicle featured as part of today’s proceedings – sugar was found in the engine of the car, after Council forced her to use the R490 000.00 vehicle.
Today, during Council proceedings, and the debate that determined her future in the Sedibeng Mayoral Chair, Mayor Maloka was giving a press interview behind closed doors. If her former misdeeds were not reason enough to remove her, her sheer disregard for Council’s role in keeping the Executive accountable is.
During the abovementioned press briefing that can only be described as a last ditch attempt to distance herself from further scrutiny, Mayor Maloka has called for a full Section 106 investigation into maladministration in her administration, whilst claiming that she is the target of a smear campaign.
We remind the mayor that she is in fact responsible for the deterioration of Sedibeng District Municipality. Every single problem she claims is part of a smear campaign, took place under her watch. The DA proudly adds its voice to the call – suspend Mayor Maloka, and conduct a speedy disciplinary investigation.
