On Thursday, 07 August 2025, the Democratic Alliance (DA) Gauteng Shadow MEC for Human Settlements, Mervyn Cirota MPL, will conduct an oversight inspection at Khutsong hostel in Carletonville. The hostel is in a dire state of neglect and deterioration, underscoring the continuous failure of the Gauteng Provincial Government to maintain and revitalise essential housing infrastructure. This is despite a staggering R161 million allocated for the relocation and upliftment of residents who continue to live in some of the inhumane conditions.

Cirota will be joined by Gauteng Human Settlements Spokesperson, Evert du Plessis MPL and Merafong Constituency Head, Ina Cilliers MPL. Together, they will engage with residents to assess how the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements’ (GDHS) failure to relocate or maintain the hostel is impacting their daily lives. Cirota will also outline the DA’s proposed interventions to assist affected residents.

The media is invited to attend, and there will be an opportunity for interviews and photographs.
