Today, Wednesday, 18 September 2024, the Democratic Alliance (DA) Gauteng Shadow MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (SACR), Kingsol Chabalala MPL, DA Gauteng Spokesperson for SACR, Leanne De Jager MPL, along with the DA Tshwane Interim Constituency Head, Cllr Shaun Wilkinson and City of Tshwane PR Councillor, Cllr Katlego Makgaleng will conduct an oversight inspection at the Women’s Living Heritage Monument in Tshwane.

The Women’s Living Heritage Monument was constructed by the department at over R200 million and was completed in 2018. By 2022, close to R80 million had been spent in getting the facility operational. However, when the DA visited the monument in 2022, we observed that it was still not fully operational due to structural deficiencies in the buildings and the bridging of some building regulations.

This monument has a huge potential to attract tourists and bring local and international investment, creating job opportunities for unemployed Tshwane residents. It has, however, been neglected and left vulnerable to vandalism and theft. This is one of many monuments that are not fully operational and do not benefit the residents of Gauteng.

As part of its Heritage Month campaign, the DA will reassess the heritage site to determine if the structural faults have been fixed and whether the certificate of occupancy has been acquired. The DA will also interact with the residents to assess the impact that the current state of this heritage site is designed to honour the role that women have and continue to play in South Africa on the economy of Tshwane.

The media is invited to attend and there will be an opportunity for interviews and photographs.
