The fatal shooting of a woman on a Metrobus in Roodepoort this morning raises serious concerns around passenger safety in the city.

It is reported that the suspected shooter fled in a car with no license plates after the incident.

The reason for the shooting is unknown as yet.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased passenger and we call on Metrobus to cooperate with the investigations to ensure justice is served.

We call on the city-owned entity to assist with counselling for the other passengers on the bus who have been left traumatised by this despicable act.

Further, and most importantly, we also call on MMC Kenny Kunene, to urgently intervene and ensure improved safety and security measures for all passengers using Metrobus. Despite the MMC spending millions on surveillance systems, as reported in the previous quarterly performance report, a vagrant was able to steal and drive a bus for a few kilometres. This underscores the need for immediate measures to prevent these incidents in future.

It is evident that the people of Johannesburg are not safe when using the limited public transport systems at their disposal. We will continue to argue for safety and consequences to those responsible for this senseless loss of life, and those responsible for causing the ease with which this crime was committed.
