Tomorrow, Monday, 13 November 2023, the Democratic Alliance (DA) Shadow MEC for Education, Khume Ramulifho MPL, will conduct follow-up oversight inspections at Durban Deep and Braamfischer Primary Schools in Soweto.

The DA will assess whether the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has fulfilled its promise to complete building brick-and-mortar infrastructure at these schools.

The department committed that Durban Deep Primary School will be completed by the end of March and Braamfischer Primary School will be completed by August this year.

However, earlier this year, when the DA conducted oversight inspections at these schools, we discovered that at Durban Deep Primary School, learning and teaching are taking place in dilapidated classrooms, and the facilities are not functional. The Braamfischer Primary School project was incomplete, with some defects and an unresolved dispute regarding houses built in the schoolyard.

However, the department indicated that Braamfischer Primary School will be ready for occupation in January next year.

Members of the media are invited, and there will be an opportunity for interviews and photographs.

Details of the oversight inspection are as follows:

Date: 13 November 2023

Oversight Inspection One:

Venue: Durban Deep Primary School, 12, Enoch Sontonga Street, Durban Deep, Roodepoort.
