The Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development (GDID) wastes R34 104 005.07 monthly on office rentals, while 41 provincial government buildings stand empty and abandoned. Instead of wasting taxpayers’ money on renting office space, GDID must fix the buildings that are not in use due to non-compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards.
This shocking revelation came in response to the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) questions tabled in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) to the MEC for Infrastructure Development, Jacob Mamabolo.

GDID has constantly failed dismally in maintaining and managing public assets. Had these buildings been maintained properly, there would be no need to spend millions on rentals that can be used to deliver services.
The DA Gauteng has drafted a motion to be submitted to the GPL about the abandoned GPG office buildings. We demand that GPG fix these abandoned offices. In addition, the GPG is paying millions of rands for security at these buildings, yet they are still being vandalised.
A DA-led Gauteng Provincial Government will prioritise refurbishment and maintenance of government-owned office buildings to save money from monthly rentals. We will end the cycle of neglect, eliminate wasteful rental expenditure, and restore accountability in how public assets are managed.
