The Duncanville Public Pool in Vereeniging is in a state of disrepair because the municipality has abandoned this facility.
The pool has not been maintained, the structure is cracking, and the pool water has algae and dirt floating on the surface.
Due to a lack of regular proper maintenance long grass, shrubs and weeds have grown all around the pool.
This facility is no longer safe to be used by residents because of the risk of waterborne illnesses as well as the safety of the area.
You can view the pictures here, here, here, and here.
This pool was once a crown jewel for the residents of Vereeniging; students and swimming clubs used this facility for training and tournaments. See a picture here of what the pool looked like previously.
It was also used to provide swimming lessons to budding swimmers.
The picture of how this swimming pool was used can be seen here,
There is a huge difference between the previous and the current shameful state of this public pool.
This is deeply disappointing as our communities are in dire need of public swimming pools and yet the municipality is failing to take care of these much-needed facilities.
The DA will hold both COGTA MEC, Lebogang Maile and Emfuleni Mayor Gift Moerane to account to ensure that the Duncanville Public Pool is properly maintained, and the residents have access to this facility.
I will also be tabling questions in the Gauteng Legislature to determine why this pool has been abandoned.
