Reiger Park flats residents in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni, are exposed to terrible living conditions due to the City of Ekurhuleni’s failure to maintain its dilapidated buildings. The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng will meet with the City of Ekurhuleni’s Human Settlements Department and the Provincial Department of Human Settlements to seek their urgent intervention to assess the state of these flats and implement necessary repairs to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents.

During an oversight inspection of Reiger Park flats, the DA found the buildings in an appalling condition. The staircases were unstable and some even collapsed, windows were shattered, roofs showed fire damage, walls were cracked and leaking, and sanitation was extremely poor. Moreover, no one from the city or the provincial government has visited these flats in two years.

See photos here, here, here and here.

This highlights the persistent failures of the Human Settlements departments in our municipalities and province to fulfil their responsibilities, which include the regular maintenance of infrastructure. By neglecting these duties, they disregard the legitimate rights of the citizens in our province.

The DA City of Ekurhuleni Councillors will meet the municipal Department of Human Settlements, and we will also submit questions to the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements MEC, Tasneem Motara, to ascertain why these flats have not been maintained.

A DA-led Gauteng Provincial Government would ensure that local and provincial authorities intervene to address the infrastructural issues in Reiger Park flats, thus preventing a looming disaster. We would ensure that these residents live in a conducive environment.
