Today, the DA in Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) has laid a complaint at the Public Protector regrading nepotism and corruption within the municipalities ranks.
This follows our receipt of numerous anonymous letters of complaint from officials within RWCLM’s Public Safety Department.
The complaint relates to RWCLM employing ten traffic wardens who are paid by the Municipality. The employment opportunities were advertised to the public, and interviews were subsequently held.
After the interview process, it was discovered that several of the successful appointees were family members or friends of senior officials and politicians within the Municipality. It cannot simply be a coincidence that, out of all the applications received for these ten positions, several friends and family members of politicians and senior officials were appointed.
We therefore request that the Public Protector investigate the appointment of the ten traffic wardens at RWCLM, specifically:
- Were any of these appointees advantaged because of their relationships with politicians and/or staff members within RWCLM?
- Were any staff members or officials with relationships to the appointees involved in the selection and/or interview process?
- Were any of these relationships declared during the application and/or interview process?
We have submitted questions to the Municipality, raised the matter through media reports, and reported it to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature to no avail.
The persistent unresponsiveness by these state institutions is unacceptable and erodes accountability and transparency.
Ultimately, a government of relatives is not a government for the people. Public servants must be appointed based on merit not political connections.
