The Democratic Alliance notes with deep concern and disgust the latest allegations against the Ekurhuleni City Manager. He is now reportedly implicated in a murder case arising from a May 2021 accident that was allegedly suppressed by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD).
These are not minor administrative concerns. These are serious, formal criminal allegations that strike at the heart of public trust and the integrity of local government.
When a senior municipal official is linked to such grave charges, it raises fundamental questions about the ethical standing of the administration and the credibility of those entrusted with public office.
The DA maintains a zero-tolerance approach to corruption, criminality, and abuse of power. Public officials are not above the law and any attempt to evade accountability whether through influence, delay, or alleged institutional cover-ups must be met with the full force of the law.
In light of this new evidence, we reiterate our call for the immediate and precautionary suspension of the City Manager to protect the integrity of ongoing investigations.
Further to this, a full, transparent and independent investigation into both the alleged incident and any role played by the EMPD in concealing it, must be conducted. We further call on law enforcement authorities to take swift action to ensure that justice is neither delayed nor denied.
The DA will continue to monitor this matter closely and will not hesitate to take further action to ensure accountability. No individual, regardless of position, should be shielded from the consequences of their actions.
