The Democratic Alliance (DA) rejects the misleading electricity tariff structure imposed on the residents of Mogale City, one that will see many households paying far more than they were led to believe.
The scrapping of Inclining Block Tariffs (IBT) in favour of Compressed Block Tariffs fundamentally shifts the burden onto lower-usage households. In effect, those who use less electricity are now penalised with higher increases, while heavier users benefit from comparatively lower rates.
For many residents, this is not a marginal adjustment. Households using modest amounts of electricity now face increases of between 20% and 56%. By contrast, higher consumption households may see minimal increases, or in some cases, even pay less than Eskom’s 9% adjustment.
Despite this, the change is being presented as a “12% increase”. A deeply misleading figure that conceals the real cost to ordinary residents.
This is a reflection of financial mismanagement by the ANC-led coalition, resulting in a tariff structure that is both unfair and poorly calculated.
The reality is simple: most households will pay more, and many will only realise the true extent of these increases when their next electricity bill arrives.
It’s clear that the DA is the only party able to make decisions that will benefit residents. Vote DA in the local government elections to place rational decision making back at the head of government.
