The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the City of Ekurhuleni welcomes the arrest of suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief of Police, Julius Mkhwanazi, by the Madlanga Commission SAPS Task Team.

The arrest follows years of sustained effort from the DA to root out corruption in Ekurhuleni.

Upon receiving information about the blue light saga in February 2023, the DA caucus acted to ensure disciplinary proceedings took place. Mere weeks later, the ANC & EFF conspired to remove us from government, allowing corruption to continue without disruption.

Given the overwhelming evidence against Mkhwanazi, from allegations of corruption, kidnapping and murder, this action is long overdue.

Similarly, others in the City of Ekurhuleni of whom there is overwhelming evidence of wrongdoing – as presented at the commission, must follow suit.

The DA will not rest until every corrupt official within the city is brought to book.

We call on residents to use the upcoming local government elections to Reclaim Ekurhuleni from criminality, and to vote to Get Ekurhuleni Working.
