The intervention by Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng has led to a successful meeting with the Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Sello Seitlholo, committing to implement the plans to have the wetland close to the Jukskei River cleaned and officially recognised as a wetland.
Once this happens, the dirt currently trapped in the litter trap will be removed. This meeting follows an oversight inspection that was conducted at the litter trap, where we discovered that the residents living close by are still being subjected to unhygienic conditions as the litter trap remains uncleaned.
“There is plastic and a whole lot of other rubbish flowing down the Jukskie River which goes through Alexandra, and it eventually ends up in the Hartebeesport dam”, says Leanne De Jager MPL.

By implementing the Morninghill wetlands plans, the current deluge of trash, sludge and sewerage into the Jukskei River will be alleviated. The residents living in close proximity to the Jukskei River will have access to clean water and the environment.
We will continue to monitor the implementation of the wetlands plan for Morninghill and follow up with the Deputy Minister on this issue.
The DA-led Gauteng Provincial Government would have solved this issue a long time ago by involving the national Department of Water and Sanitation to implement the Morninghill wetland plan to ensure the environment is protected and preserved.
