The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Vosloorus Ekurhuleni brought a motion to Parliament, seeking national intervention at the Vosloorus South African Police Services (SAPS) station. The ANC voted against this critical motion.
The ANC’s decision to vote against the Motion without Notice is appalling, especially considering the station’s alarming crime statistics. Between January 1, 2020, and June 30, 2024, Vosloorus reported:
- Armed Robbery: 677 cases with only 11 convictions
- Murder : 301 cases with 12 convictions
- Attempted Murder: 421 cases with 9 convictions
- Vehicle Theft: 197 cases with 2 convictions
- Possession of Illegal Substances and Narcotics: 1,774 cases with 6 convictions
Most shockingly is the conviction rate coming out of Vosloorus reported crimes, a shocking 40 convictions out of 3,370 reported cases. There is a serious need for improvement in our country’s justice system. The truth of the matter is, that we have to start on local levels to address this issue, something the ANC parliamentary caucus evidently does not understand.
During a recent oversight visit, the Brigadier emphasised the need for more cells and resources, yet the ANC both in Gauteng and evidently in Parliament prioritises initiatives like the ineffective Green Wardens. This misplaced priority has real-life consequences, with women and girls remaining vulnerable to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and communities living in fear of crime.
We will continue to hold the Minister accountable for providing the necessary resources and support to ensure the safety and security of the people of Vosloorus. The ANC’s actions only serve to underscore the need for greater transparency and accountability in government.
We demand that the Minister prioritises the safety needs of Vosloorus, addressing the critical shortages and infrastructure needs at the police station. The people of Vosloorus deserve better.
