Last night, the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) submitted an urgent request to extend the use of blue lights for those who violated the law and failed to submit sufficient evidence that they do need the additional security.

This last-minute attempt to continue using unlawful and unconstitutional blue lights was dismissed by the Johannesburg High Court. It is an absolute disgrace that the City was using its time and resources desperately fighting over unlawful and unconstitutional blue lights, in the middle of a water crisis. The executive in the CoJ’s priorities have never been more laid bare than in this instance.

We therefore have written to the Executive Mayor to remind him that all VIP Protection outside of the allowable upper limits should be parked, and if the city fails to do so, they will be in contempt of court.

Our belief in the rule of law is central to holding the executive to account, and we will continue to do just that.
