The Democratic Alliance (DA) strongly condemns the senseless act of vandalism at the Bredell Cemetery in Kempton Park which left the Wall of Remembrance damaged, plaques and urns destroyed, and ashes of loved ones scattered on the ground.
This heinous act is a heartbreaking violation of a sacred space meant for mourning and reflection.
Such actions not only cause immense emotional pain to affected families but also highlight the failure of the ANC-EFF run City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) to ensure the protection and maintenance of cemeteries.
These are spaces of cultural and emotional significance, and their desecration is unacceptable.
The DA calls on the CoE to prioritise the safety and upkeep of cemeteries by implementing the following measures:
1. Enhanced security: Increase security personnel and surveillance at all cemeteries, particularly those that have been repeatedly targeted by vandals;
2. Regular maintenance and monitoring: Conduct regular inspections to ensure the upkeep and early detection of any damage or illegal activity;
3. Community engagement: Collaborate with local communities to foster shared responsibility for the care and preservation of these spaces; and
4. Swift accountability: Work closely with law enforcement to ensure that perpetrators of such crimes are brought to justice without delay.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the families affected by this act of vandalism. Their grief is compounded by the ANC-EFF coalition’s neglect of its responsibilities and uncaring attitude.
The DA remains committed to holding the City accountable and ensuring that our cemeteries are places of dignity and respect.
