The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng strongly and unequivocally condemns the violent ANC response to today’s Motion of No Confidence in Emfuleni’s ANC Mayor

The vicious conduct of the ANC, during today’s council sitting convened to hear the Motion of No Confidence in the Mayor, ended with not only stopping the Council sitting but also destroying municipal property.

When the DA filed this motion, we did for the good of the people of Emfuleni, because of gross failures by the ANC Mayor:

  • Both Water and Electricity utility services have collapsed, because of the municipality’s inability to manage its finances;
  • Emfuleni’s Eskom account sits in excess of R6 billion;
  • The Municipality’s bank accounts have been attached multiple times, and as a result they cannot even pay their employees’ salaries;
  • Waste collection in Emfuleni is non-existent; and
  • 72% of all water supplied to the Emfuleni local municipality is lost, wasted or unusable.

The DA will ensure that this motion is brought back on to the agenda in Council.

We note that the pathetic attempt by the Emfuleni ANC to undermine a democratic process is not unique of the ANC this week, as on Friday in the Northern Cape a MONC against the ANC Mayor of the ZF Mgcawu District brought that council and council meeting to breaking point when the ANC did not have the numbers to defend its failing Mayor.

We know that this is how the ANC reacts when their failures come home to roost. The DA is not deterred. The residents of Emfuleni deserve better than the failing mayor to which they have been subjected by the failing ANC of Panyaza Lesufi’s Gauteng Province.
