In 2021, I started a petition called “Give Emfuleni Its Power Back,” which I submitted to the NCOP in November that year.
In 2023, during the petition hearing, the Gauteng Provincial Government, Emfuleni, and Eskom undertook to replace broken and faulty transformers in Emfuleni by May 2024.
However, May 2024 came and went, and the Gauteng Provincial Government, Emfuleni Municipality and Eskom failed to implement the resolutions agreed to during the NCOP hearings.
In September 2024, we marched to the Gauteng Provincial Government offices to raise the matter, but the Premier still failed to intervene and ensure that the broken transformers were replaced.
In 2025, we returned to the NCOP to request its intervention. As a result, the NCOP visited Evaton in February 2026.
This is part of our sustained efforts to bring electricity back to Emfuleni, where the ANC-led Emfuleni finally condescended to assist, with complete lethargy.
Since then, Eskom has begun electrification work in Evaton, including installing new transformers.
While this represents progress, we are not satisfied with the pace of implementation. Given how long residents have been without reliable electricity, the ANC-led administration still shows no real sense of urgency.
As mentioned in our Manifesto 2026, if elected, I will keep the lights on by reinvesting electricity revenue into electrical infrastructure, maintaining grids, enabling municipalities to buy and sell their own power, and supporting households and businesses that can feed electricity back into the system.
Reliable and affordable electricity directly drives job creation by powering business growth, while power shortages and high energy costs destroy existing jobs and halt hiring.
Overall, the DA secured this victory with the support of Emfuleni residents, after years of persistent pressure, advocacy, and engagement with the relevant authorities.
