The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Merafong has escalated the Municipality’s continued water woes to parliament.
The residents of Merafong continue to face significant water challenges as renewed restrictions seem to be impacting both areas. Despite recent assurances and a partial debt repayment agreement between Merafong Municipality and Rand Water, water access remains inconsistent.
At approximately 17h50 on 30 October, Rand Water officials were reportedly seen near the main water supply valve to Carletonville, located near site 007. When I personally visited the site about 30-40 minutes later, the Rand Water team had already left. Based on reports from local residents and my direct observations, it appears likely that Rand Water has again restricted the water supply to Carletonville. Although official confirmation is pending, residents have begun to experience reduced water flow, mirroring previous restrictions.
Additionally, residents of Fochville reported experiencing temporary water restrictions in the evening of 30 October and early in the following morning. Although these limitations were not as prolonged as Carletonville’s, they add to the concern about ongoing water reliability across Merafong.
I have been in touch with the MMC for Water and Electricity in Merafong, who assured me he would investigate. My fellow DA Councillors Carlos Rebelo, Dawie Harman, and I have also reached out to local officials to address these urgent matters. Officials have committed to engaging Rand Water further on 31 October 2024, to discuss solutions to Carletonville and Fochville’s continued water shortages.
It is especially concerning that, despite a recent arrangement to utilise part of Merafong’s equitable share from the Treasury to offset Rand Water debts, restrictions continue. This development underscores the urgent need for sustained, transparent action and accountability.
I have also escalated this matter to Leon Basson, the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Water and Sanitation, for national oversight and support.
Residents are encouraged to add their voices to the call for action by signing the DA’s petition urging the Gauteng Government to resolve the water crisis and prevent dry taps across the province.
