This information was revealed by the Gauteng Department of Roads and Logistics during a recent Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s (GPL) Roads and Logistics Portfolio Committee meeting.
The department conducted an audit of 400 provincial robots in the province to determine exactly how many robots are not working, which revealed that 149 are not working.
It is worrying that so many robots are not working in the province, which could not only lead to accidents but also cause high volumes of traffic during peak hour traffic.
Furthermore, theft and vandalism of robots in the province is a huge problem, and the department needs to investigate alternative technologies that can help clamp down on this.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) will continue to put pressure on the MEC for Roads and Logistics, Kedibone Diale Tlabela, to ensure that all provincial robots are fixed as a matter of urgency.
The DA has a petition in place for motorists and residents to report cases where robots are not working, have been stolen, or vandalised. Gauteng residents deserve a government committed to ensuring that our roads are in tip-top condition and that infrastructure like robots is maintained and fixed regularly.
