The Democratic Alliance (DA) strongly condemns the growing culture of alleged lawlessness surrounding Mayor Dada Morero’s executive.
English soundbite by Cllr Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku
Last week, the DA wrote to the Mayor calling for the removal of MMC Thapelo Amad from the executive, following criminal cases opened against him. To date, no decisive action has been taken by the Mayor.
Media reports have emerged alleging that a completely different MMC was arrested in connection with a kidnapping matter. Yesterday, whistleblowers also approached the DA alleging that victims assaulted by yet another MMC, were blocked from opening a case at the Lenasia South Police Station – one of the complainants is still waiting for a case number in this regard, days later.
It would seem that today’s State of the City Address by the mayor should be less about the City of Johannesburg, and more about what is happening in his own executive.
The Mayor’s continued silence and failure to act creates the impression that MMCs are above the law and politically protected.
Instead of focusing on collapsing infrastructure, service delivery failures, water shortages and power outages, MMCs are seemingly embroiled in scandal and conflict with the very same residents they are meant to serve.
Morero and his MMCs are turning Johannesburg into a gangster’s paradise where allegations of intimidation, violence and lawlessness against the executive is fast becoming the norm.
A mayor who cannot run his own executive, cannot run a City. Come the local government elections, Helen Zille will turn our City around.
