Today, Tuesday, 10 September 2024, the Democratic Alliance (DA) Gauteng Shadow MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (SACR), Kingsol Chabalala MPL, DA Gauteng Spokesperson for SACR, Leanne De Jager MPL, along with the DA Shadow MMC for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Lyrics Mazibuko, DA City of Johannesburg PR Councillor, Cllr Vasco Da Gama and DA PR Councillor in the City of Johannesburg, Bongani Nkwanyane, will conduct an oversight visit at the Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication in Kliptown, Soweto.

The DA has previously expressed concerns about the economic losses suffered by Soweto residents after the Walter Sisulu Square, worth R160 million, was damaged and vandalised by criminals during the social unrest in 2021.

The Walter Sisulu Square, once a vibrant hub of activity, has unfortunately been neglected and no longer a tourist attraction as it used to.

As part of Heritage Month campaign, the DA will reassess the heritage site to determine if the damage has been fixed. Additionally, we will engage with the residents to assess the impact that the current state of this historical site is having on the local economy.

The media is invited to attend and there will be an opportunity for interviews and photographs.

Details of the event are as follows:

Date: Tuesday, 10 September 2024
