The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng demands that the Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, and the Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale Tlabela, review the scholar transport policy to ensure the safety of learners.

This follows a horrific accident where a scholar transport carrying learners from Sandringham High School collided with another vehicle yesterday in Alexandra. Six learners sustained minor injuries, and of these learners, one had his leg broken.

The DA is deeply concerned about several accidents involving scholar transport in the province due to the government’s failure to provide safe and reliable transportation for our learners.

We have consistently urged MEC Chiloane to increase safety measures for scholar transportation in the province and to review the scholar transport policy to ensure all necessary safety precautions are in place and adhered to by the transport operators. Sadly, our calls have fallen on deaf ears.

The DA reiterates its demand to review the current policy, which has underserved our learners in this province.

We wish a speedy recovery to injured learners, and we will continue to monitor the case and ensure that the parents receive answers about what happened leading up to this incident.
