Tomorrow, Thursday, 3 November 2022, the Democratic Alliance (DA) Gauteng Shadow MEC for Education, Khume Ramulifho MPL and the DA Randfontein Ward 8 Councilor, Cllr Balderic Dreyer, will conduct an oversight inspection at Randfontein Secondary School.

The Gauteng Department of Education has failed to eradicate asbestos schools in the province. Randfontein Secondary School is one of the 29 schools built on asbestos structures, still leaving learners and teachers exposed to an unsafe and unhealthy environment.

This asbestos infrastructure has deteriorated and poses a health risk to both teachers and learners. The environment is not conducive to learning and teaching.

Premier Panyaza Lesufi failed to fulfil his promise to eradicate asbestos infrastructure schools in Gauteng.

The DA will engage with the school management and the School Governing Body (SGB) to ascertain the progress made to date to eradicate asbestos infrastructure.

We will also observe grade 12 learners writing their examinations. These learners are writing their final exams after learning in an environment not conducive to learning.

Members of the media are invited and there will be an opportunity for interviews and photographs.

Details of the oversight inspections are as follows:

Date: 3 November 2022

Time: 09:00 to 10:00 am

Venue: Randfontein Secondary School, Toekomsrus, Randfontein, 1765
