The Democratic Alliance (DA) is calling on the Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko to investigate the conduct of the Executive Chairperson of the Gauteng Provincial Community Police Board, Thokozani Jacob Masilela.

This follows numerous complaints from the public claiming that Masilela has a criminal record that he has failed to disclose while accepting a nomination of being elected as the Executive Chairperson of the Gauteng Provincial Community Police Board.

The DA has been reliably informed that Masilela was found guilty in 2004 of a charge of common assault. In 2016 he was again charged with common assault and the case was withdrawn from court.

According to MEC Mazibuko, Masilela has been in that position since 2016 to date and the department is not aware that he has a criminal record because he never disclosed this.

The MEC was responding to the DA’s written questions in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.

We call on MEC Mazibuko to investigate whether Masilela indeed has a criminal record. If he is found to have a criminal record Masilela, who is also the Executive Member of the National Community Police Board will not be eligible to hold such positions in either the Provincial and National Community Police Board.

We will continue to put pressure on MEC Mazibuko to enforce the code of conduct of the Board which entails that all Board members should undergo a security clearance process. This will ensure that all members of the Board are eligible to hold their positions.
