Residents across Johannesburg, including Melville, Brixton, Crosby, Mayfair, Kensington and Parktown West, are protesting and battling prolonged water outages.
Meanwhile, about 70% of the listed municipal clinics are facing water shortages, and some also lack electricity and generator diesel. Yet Mayor Dada Morero insists there is no water crisis.
It is an absolute disgrace that the Mayor continues to downplay the suffering of residents.
The latest clinic report is alarming: Mpumelelo, Thuthukani, Bophelong, Mayibuye and Hikhensile clinics have no water. Several are also experiencing electricity and generator failures, forcing patients and staff to be redirected.
This compromises basic hygiene, healthcare delivery, and patient safety, particularly for babies, pregnant women, elderly residents, and people with chronic conditions.
Businesses are suffering, households cannot maintain basic hygiene, and vulnerable residents are forced to pay for alternative water supplies.
The Mayor must urgently provide a citywide water recovery plan, reliable water tankers, emergency support for clinics, and clear timelines for infrastructure repairs.
A crisis does not disappear simply because the Mayor refuses to acknowledge it.
If elected to govern, as outlined in our Manifesto 2026, we will get water flowing by reinvesting water revenue in infrastructure and bringing in private-sector investment and expertise.
Reliable service delivery also will attract investment, boost the economy and create jobs for residents.
The DA government will ensure residents’ concerns are taken seriously, their basic right to access water is protected, and revenue meant for water is ringfenced. Johannesburg residents deserve water, functioning clinics and accountability, not excuses.
