Following the tragic murder of six women in Ekurhuleni, the DA demands that Gauteng SAPS senior leadership and the EMPD urgently appear before the Gauteng Legislature’s Community Safety Portfolio Committee.
We have written to the Portfolio Committee Chairperson, Dr. Bandile Masuku, as well as the City of Ekurhuleni, requesting an urgent meeting to address the recent killings in Kempton Park and the broader failures in the policing and safety response.
We want answers: What did the police and crime intelligence know? When did they know it? Were warning signs missed? And why did it take multiple deaths before the alarm was raised?
Police have now identified similarities between the murders, established a task team, and warned women to “take precautions”. That cannot be the answer.
Women should not have to change how they live because criminals are free to prey on them. The job of the police is to detect, prevent and fight crime.
SAPS and the EMPD must explain whether crime patterns were detected, whether intelligence was shared, whether enough officers were deployed and, most importantly, what they are doing now to prevent another woman from being killed.
This is about six women who will never return home and thousands of women now wondering whether they are safe.
When elected Mayor of Ekurhuleni, I will make safety a priority and make the EMPD a professional, efficient police department that residents can trust, with more boots on the ground, specialized capacity, and technology to win the war against crime, and stronger cooperation with community heroes, CPFs, and SAPS.
We will continue to monitor the matter and use all available oversight mechanisms to demand accountability from SAPS and EMPD and push for stronger policing and safer communities in Ekurhuleni.
