The Democratic Alliance (DA) is deeply concerned that the ANC-led government in Tshwane has not built new stormwater systems or new roads.
Instead, Urban Settlements Development Grant (USDG) funding is being redirected towards resurfacing existing roads, while critical road infrastructure projects, including the reconstruction of Buitekant Street in Soshanguve, have effectively been defunded.
Buitekant Street in Soshanguve was budgeted for under the Brink Administration.
Two years later, the ANC-led government in Tshwane is still failing to upgrade the very same road.
While some may applaud the ANC for campaigning on road resurfacing, many communities are still waiting for the critical infrastructure improvements they desperately need.
In April 2025, the ANC reduced the Buitekant Street budget by R3.1 million because it was not ready to appoint a contractor, and the situation has not changed. The project was already defunded in April 2025 before the road upgrade was even advertised, only for a report to be tabled before Council in June 2026 confirming that no contractor had yet been appointed.
In the same report, it was stated that the allocated funds would instead be redirected to road resurfacing, while the Buitekant Street carriageway continues to hinder public transport operators and commuters.
We will continue to hold the ANC-led government accountable for its failure to deliver critical infrastructure. We will use every available mechanism in Council to demand transparency, expose poor planning, and fight for the proper allocation of public funds so that infrastructure projects are completed on time and communities receive the services they deserve.
