Gauteng schools remain unsafe for learners as the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) fails to implement adequate safety measures to create a secure learning and teaching environment.
The two tragic deaths of one learner at Bernard Isaacs Primary School in Coronationville and another learner at Reagile Primary School in Tembisa have demonstrated that our children are not safe in an environment where their safety should be prioritised. These incidents further show that GDE is reactionary in its approach to learners’ safety.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the investigations announced by the GDE MEC Matome Chiloane into the circumstances that led to these tragic losses of life. However, this should not be the last action taken. The department needs to urgently implement stronger security measures in our schools to prevent similar incidents in the future.
During his recent State of the Province Address, Premier Panyaza Lesufi only focused on scholar transport incidents, neglecting the fact that dangers to our learners also lie within school premises.
The DA will submit formal questions to determine the terms of reference for each investigation, whether there is any culpability, and whether corrective measures will be implemented.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families and school community affected by these heartbreaking incidents. Our thoughts are with them during this painful time.
The DA-led Gauteng Provincial Government would treat learner safety as non-negotiable. We would prioritise regular safety audits at all schools, prioritise maintenance and ensure that schools are properly resourced to protect every child in their care. This can be done!
