Since 2015 the Vereeniging taxi rank has been under construction with millions being funneled into its refurbishment with nothing to show for it except extended contracts and failed payments due to the mismanagement of the ANC-led municipality.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has been fighting for safe and convenient transport for the residents of Vereeniging who deserve travel that is accessible and efficient.

The taxi rank has been demolished and rebuild by the Gauteng Provincial Government at a loss of over R80 million that was squandered. Upon completion it was discovered that the new tax rank did not meet the specifications and could not be utilised.

Since then, the taxi rank has been vandalised and it has deteriorated significantly requiring more money to rebuild it.

This has led to residents not having access to reliable transport as well as the demise of small businesses resulting in job losses, affecting livelihoods.

The DA has tabled questions in the legislature, driven petitions through committees and done numerous pickets to raise awareness about this issue and demand a resolution.

As a result of DA efforts, we celebrate our victory with the opening of the Vereeniging Taxi Rank which is finally complete with state-of-the-art facilities with CCTV cameras for safety, solar lighting throughout, 84 stalls for informal traders, a full surveillance room, modern offices, a boardroom, a car workshop, a fully equipped car wash and properly finished furnished amenities.

The DA will continue to fight for basic service delivery for the welfare and benefit of the residents of Vereeniging
