The Gauteng Department Economic Development has wasted R400 000 to try and overturn a R150 000 claim by a former Gauteng Gambling Board (GGB) employee.
This has been revealed by the Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Lebogang Maile in a written reply to the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) question tabled in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) regarding the case in the Labour Court, for a dismissed GGB employee, Lucky Lukhwareni who claimed a disputed R150 000 acting allowance claim.
To contest the case, which was overturned, the GGB which falls under the Department of Economic Development, paid its legal team R400 000.
The judgement of the clearly unwinnable case was handed down on 18 August 2025.
The DA questions the common sense of the department, when it rubberstamps such wastage and the ethics of both the attorneys and the advocate, who each charged the GGB more than the amount that was being claimed.
A DA-led Gauteng Provincial Government would never allow such nonsensical waste which borders on criminals, when the province is struggling to meet the needs of its citizens.
