Where are Joburg’s Mayoral Chain and Regiment Sword?

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has repeatedly tried to get answers about the location and safekeeping of important City of Joburg artefacts, namely the Mayoral Chain and Regiment Sword.

Yet the City’s Speaker, MMC, and Chairperson of the Community Development Committee have provided confusing, misleading, and contradictory information.

An oversight visit to view the artefacts, scheduled for 14 November 2025, was postponed for vague reasons that don’t hold up. Meanwhile, the Speaker reportedly saw the Chain in October, yet other councillors still cannot access it.

This looks like a deliberate attempt to hide the truth.

The MMC for Community Development also failed to exhibit the Chain and Sword at the September Council Meeting, ignoring a clear committee resolution.

The artefacts are supposedly kept safely in a bank, yet the Executive refuses to prove this to Council.

This is a blatant failure of transparency and oversight.

The DA will not stop demanding answers and will seek urgent intervention from the Gauteng Cogta MEC, Jacob Mamabolo.
