The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Tshwane is deeply concerned about the ongoing sewage overflow in Cultura Park, Bronkhorstspruit, which continues to contaminate the neighbourhood, nearby streams, and the Bronkhorstspruit River. This long-standing issue poses a serious risk to both public health and the environment — particularly in light of the recent typhoid outbreak and high levels of bacterial contamination in our natural water systems across the City.
The problem stems from a damaged sewer line that runs beneath the N4, between Verster Park and Cultura Park. Although earlier interventions were made to realign the pipe through SANRAL, the replacement infrastructure was undersized and failed to provide a lasting solution. As a result, repeated blockages have caused sewage to spill into private properties and local waterways, creating a major environmental and health concern for residents.
The DA recognises the frustration of residents who have gone to great lengths to manage the overflow themselves — building makeshift barriers and pumping waste in an effort to protect their homes and their neighbourhood. No community should have to live under such conditions.
We commend DA Councillor Reyaan Uys, who has persisted for more than a year in escalating this matter and standing with residents.
The DA will continue to apply pressure on the City of Tshwane and SANRAL to implement a permanent engineering solution that replaces the undersized pipeline, prevents further contamination, and restores the dignity and safety of the affected community
