DA welcomes asset seizure of Tembisa Hospital tender suspects

The DA in Gauteng welcomes the Asset Forfeiture Unit’s seizure of nearly R400 million in property of Hangwani Maumela and Rudolph Mazibuko, whose companies got fishy contracts from Tembisa Hospital that whistle-blower Babita Deokaran tried to stop before she was murdered.

In Maumela’s case, more than R450 million was paid to 14 companies linked to him. He is President Cyril Ramaphosa’s nephew by a previous marriage.

It is gratifying to see movement against those who allegedly got grossly over-priced contracts for goods that may not even have been delivered.

We hope that other identified culprits who benefited from multiple irregular hospital contracts also have their property seized.

But it cannot stop there.

The DA will push for criminal charges to be laid, and renewed action to find the mastermind behind Babita’s assassination.

The broader problem is that the Gauteng Health Department loses about R2 billion every year due to rampant corruption.

We will continue to pressure Premier Panyaza Lesufi to overhaul the Gauteng Health Department’s top leadership so that corruption and inefficiency is eradicated.

Hospital patients should come first, not greedy tenderpreneurs.
