In a tragic turn of events following yesterday’s Democratic Alliance political action outside Premier Lesufi’s office against Gauteng’s crime crisis, one of our committed DA activists and party member, Michael Muthiya, who had attended the protest during the day was confronted by criminals and murdered in a senseless crime upon returning home from the protest. He had taken a stand during the day, demanding action from Lesufi against Gauteng’s crime crisis, and by night he was the victim of Gauteng’s crime crisis.
Yesterday, after the DA said enough-is-enough, we were told by Lesufi that fighting crime remains “at the heart of his government.” Today, we must mourn the senseless murder of one of our beloved colleagues who was brave enough to take a stand yesterday.
While the Gauteng Provincial Government plays politics, they remain ignorant to what Gauteng’s people go through.
The Gauteng government is not doing nearly enough to curb crime, that much is clear.
The DA’s fight now intensifies, in the name of our dear Michale Muthiya and every victim of crime in Gauteng. You cannot disrespect the people of our province any longer, Premier Lesufi. They are dying, they are raped, they are robbed, they are assaulted – while you run away and hide.
Alongside thousands of signatories the DA will demand that the Gauteng Provincial Government takes crime seriously. While we might mourn today, tomorrow we shall continue.
Justice must be served for Michael and all others. The DA extends our deepest and most sincere condolences to the family of Michael Muthiya – a committed, and dedicated activist who fought to rescue South Africa and rescue Gauteng. The DA calls for the cowardly murderers of DA activist Michael Muthiya to be brought to book. We will engage the SA Police Service to ensure thorough investigations are undertaken.
