The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng is appalled that Mr Sello Sekhokho — a key suspect in the Tembisa Hospital corruption scandal — is reportedly campaigning to become ANC Ekurhuleni Regional Chairperson with the support of Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko.

Sekhokho currently serves as Treasurer-General of the ANC’s Ekurhuleni region. Between 2019 and 2021, he raked in R14.5 million through 55 contracts awarded by Tembisa Hospital.

His three companies — Kaizen Projects, Nokokhokho Medical Supplies, and Bollanoto Security — secured R2.8 million in 2019, R4.2 million in 2020, and a whopping R7.5 million in 2021 when Dr Ashley Mthunzi became the hospital’s CEO.

Mthunzi was later suspended following a News24 investigation which revealed that murdered whistleblower Babita Deokaran had flagged R850 million in contracts at Tembisa Hospital as “possibly fraudulent”. Before her death, Deokaran had tried to halt the suspicious payments, including those to Sekhokho’s companies.

Further revelations in response to my questions in the Gauteng Legislature showed Sekhokho’s companies received 225 contracts worth R84 million from other public hospitals. These deals included blatant overpricing, such as men’s shoes billed at R10,000 a pair and jerseys costing R11,500 each.

In March 2023, the Hawks raided Sekhokho’s home and business premises, and he remains under investigation.

The ANC in Ekurhuleni appears unfazed by the evidence of Sekhokho’s enrichment through questionable state contracts — and neither, it seems, is the Gauteng Health MEC, who is reportedly backing his leadership bid.

This shows the sleaze and shamelessness of the ANC in Gauteng. I have long suspected that corrupt individuals within the Gauteng Health Department enjoy political protection as it benefits senior ANC figures.

According to the DA’s Cancer Scandal Tracker, it is now 20 days since a court ruling that castigated the Department for not providing life-saving treatment to cancer patients, but Premier Panyaza Lesufi has still not fired the Health MEC and Head of Department.

The DA will continue to expose corruption that robs our people of quality healthcare by siphoning off money from hospitals and clinics.
