The DA Gauteng is demanding action to fix broken chillers in the operating theatres in Tembisa Hospital as this is endangering the lives of patients undergoing surgery.
Recent hot weather has increased the infection risk of surgery not done in properly chilled conditions. Flies have even been seen in the warm operating theatres.
The air-conditioning in all 11 theatres has been broken since last year, and the four fans that have been brought in are ineffective in cooling temperatures.
It’s yet another indication of poor maintenance and repair of machines in Gauteng public hospitals.
Operations have also been cancelled at the Steve Biko Hospital because of broken theatre chillers.
Patients are being told to wait until the new financial year in April as the budget has run out.
Premier Panyaza Lesufi needs to urgently fix the health crisis in Gauteng which he largely ignored in his SOPA this week.
