The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng strongly condemns the actions of the Daveyton Skill School Principal, which resulted in the drowning deaths of two pupils, Siphamandla Peterson, 15, and Sibusiso Sibiya, 17, during a discipline camp in Centurion.

The recently released findings from the investigation conducted by Seanego Attorneys reveal alarming negligence on the part of the school’s principal, which led to this devastating incident. According to the investigation, the principal unilaterally made all decisions regarding the camp without adhering to the required procedures and safety protocols.

Key findings from the investigation include:

1. Lack of approval and procedure compliance

2. Inadequate supervision

3. Ignoring departmental communications

4. SGB exclusion of the planned trip.

The DA supports Gauteng MEC of Education Matome Chiloane’s decision to initiate disciplinary action against the principal. We must set a precedent that individuals who break the laws established to safeguard our learners will face consequences. As the school principal, he should have been responsible and ensured that all procedures were followed before the school trip. Instead, he chose shortcuts and put learners in a precarious position.

We urge the Gauteng Education Department to reinforce strict adherence to safety protocols and procedures for all school activities. Additionally, there must be rigorous monitoring and support to guarantee compliance and the safety of all learners.

The Democratic Alliance will be submitting questions to gather further information on the investigation outcomes. The DA remains committed to advocating for the highest standards of education and safety in our schools.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families and the entire Daveyton Skills School community during this incredibly difficult time.
