The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng would like to applaud the South African Police Service (SAPS) for the swift arrest of a suspect in the farm murder which recently took place in Cullinan.
Last weekend a farmer was brutally murdered and his wife sustained horrendous injuries during the attack. Farm attacks are not just crimes against individuals, but assaults on the very fabric of our rural communities. Rural communities are the heart of our agricultural economy and the safety and security of our citizens.
The DA will continue to put pressure on the Gauteng Department of Community Safety and the South African Police Service to work with the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to combat farm murders.
This can be done by increasing the presence of the SAPS in rural areas, forming specialised rural safety units and establishing relationships with community policing and partnerships.
The DA has already written to Premier Panyaza Lesufi regarding the establishment of working relationship with other departments to combat farm murders.
