An Eskom transformer has been broken for over a year, affecting the operations of The South African Depression and Anxiety Group and Lawyers Against Abuse in Diepsloot. These organisations have been without Eskom power for this extended period.

Recent media reports have revealed that the Eskom transformer responsible for powering the area where multiple welfare organisations are situated has reportedly malfunctioned due to illegal connections. Consequently, these organisations have been compelled to resort to generators, resulting in substantial financial burdens.

The extended outage of this transformer not only inconveniences the community of Diepsloot but also impacts the essential services provided to the most vulnerable residents. Ensuring a dependable power supply is vital for the well-being of the residents, and urgent action is necessary to fix and secure the transformer.

The DA will table questions in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) to get a sense of whether these welfare organisations are funded by the Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD) and what intergovernmental discussions have taken place to ensure that transformers are protected.
