The annual reports for the 2022/23 financial year reveal high acts of corruption, maladministration, and a lack of good leadership across all the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) departments.
The Gauteng Department of Health has failed to spend R2.7 billion of last year’s health budget. This happens while major hospitals, including Chris Hani Baragwanath, have run out of food because suppliers were not paid. In addition, the Department of Health incurred R2.280 billion in irregular expenditure, which is unsurprising for a department that year after year fails to implement the recommendations of the Auditor General.
Residents need a driven government that will not create false hope by promising panic buttons and safety wardens. While commemorating the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, the GPG’s grand plans have failed to translate into tangible results; this is evident through the rising crime statistics and the deteriorating state of police stations.
Furthermore, over R116 million was not spent on providing well-equipped sporting facilities, functioning libraries, and craft hubs.
The DA believes improved artificial intelligence technology will mitigate challenges experienced across the province. Imagine what this can do for service delivery, where a government can respond and engage with residents with the most up-to-date information that speaks to their needs.
The Gauteng government must not rest on its laurels but seize the opportunities that come with emerging technologies like AI. By grabbing this opportunity, we will not be on the back foot, as we can ensure real empowerment, equity, and efficiency in this province.
