The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng demands that police stations across Gauteng be adequately equipped with the resources needed to clamp down on gender-based violence (GBV) in the province. This is because many victims of rape and GBV are scared to report such cases in our police stations because of fear of being victimised.
Today, the DA held a picket outside the Moroka Police Station in Soweto to highlight the importance of acting against GBV in the province.
Moroka Police Station has one of the highest reported rape cases. Furthermore, the victim empowerment centre (VEC) at this police station was burned down and has still not been fixed.
A total of 2096 cases of rape have been reported in the province. 54 of these cases were at the Moroka police station.
All police stations across Gauteng must have VECs that are equipped with trauma counsellors and social workers.
The DA will continue to fight for the rights of our residents who fall prey to GBV. We will continue to lobby for all police stations to have police officers who are trained to handle cases of GBV and for all police stations to have a fully functioning VEC.
