Over 2000 Slovo Park Informal Settlements residents continue to live in appalling conditions with no access to basic services due to Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Lebohang Maile’s failure to install bulk infrastructure.
MEC Maile promised these residents that the bulk infrastructure would be installed in 2017. To date, this has not yet materialised as the project is still at the feasibility stage.
Six years later, these residents still do not have access to running water, proper sanitation, or electricity.
Today, the DA conducted an oversight inspection at the Slovo Park Informal Settlement, and we discovered that over 2000 residents share 20 toilets.
Please see the photos here, here, and here.
The neglect of Slovo Park residents has created tensions between them and Cosby residents because of electricity theft, illegal connections, and social ills. These residents deserve a capable government that will restore their dignity by ensuring that they have access to all basic services
The DA will be tabling questions to MEC Maile in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) to ascertain why there have been delays in the installation of the bulk infrastructure. We want to know why this project has not progressed despite an increase in budget allocation.
Enough with empty promises, residents of Slovo Park Informal Settlements deserve a capable government that will restore their dignity by ensuring that they have access to all basic services.
