Following the capture of the Johannesburg Executive Mayoralty by the ANC-EFF coalition of corruption, former DA Executive Mayor Cllr Mpho Phalatse has formed a highly-skilled shadow mayoral committee (SMC) to ensure that the residents of the City of Johannesburg’s interests are still looked after and service delivery to residents does not suffer.
The chaotic coming into office of the new City Executive has exposed the extensive shortcomings of the ANC’s coalition of corruption, spearheaded by a puppet and mayoral placeholder, Cllr Thapelo Amad of Al Jama-ah. This is nothing more than government by charade and a transparent attempt for the ANC-EFF-PA coalition of corruption to regain control of the City’s purse strings. Residents of Johannesburg and service delivery are mere afterthoughts in these attempts to resume looting and leeching in Johannesburg.
The DA’s shadow mayoral committee, under Cllr Phalatse’s leadership, will ensure that effective oversight is done and that the service delivery progress made under the DA-led Multi-Party Coalition is built on rather than eroded. The residents of Johannesburg cannot afford this period of ANC-EFFPA governance to be a repeat of the graft and corruption that characterised coalition of corruption governance in the City in the past.
The DA SMC will also ensure its own readiness to serve the residents and establish stable and constructive continuity should this unstable ANC-EFF-PA coalition of corruption implode under the weight of its incompetence and opportunism.
The SMC is made up of the following DA councillors, drawing on the extensive knowledge and experience within the DA in Johannesburg:
Finance: Cllr Julie Suddaby
Group Corporate and Shared Services (GCSS): Cllr Leah Knott
Environment and Infrastructure Services (EISD): Cllr Michael Sun
Development Planning: Cllr Belinda Echeozonjoku
Human Settlements: Cllr Alex Christians
Transport: Cllr Michael Crichton
Economic Development: Cllr Bongani Nkomo
Community Development: Cllr Nonhlanhla Sifumba
Public Safety: Cllr Solomon Maila
Health and Social Development: Cllr Rashieda Landis
The City of Johannesburg deserves stable government that is focused on delivering reliable, resident-focused services. The DA in Johannesburg is committed to achieving this and will build the foundations of such government from opposition, winning the trust and support of our constituents and ready to serve all Johannesburg’s residents.
